We’ve spent N4bn on capital projects—KEDCO MD

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company, KEDCO, said it spent over N4 billion on the execution of capital projects in 2018.

The Managing Director of the company, Dr Jamilu Gwamna, made the disclosure at a lunch organised for working Journalists in the state on Monday.

Mr Gwamana said the amount was expended on the purchase of 200 transformers, 60 operational vehicles and other necessary materials required for the smooth operation of the company.

He said the transformers and the vehicles were procured as part of the company’s effort to boost power supply in the three states of its operations.

NAN reports that KEDCO is serving three states including Kano, Katsina and Jigawa and some parts of Bauchi State.

According to him, the company found it necessary to procure the materials in order to ensure stability in its network as well as to ensure effective service delivery.

He said the company had been able to meter no fewer than 120, 000 customers from the less than 40, 000 customers in the last few years.

He, however, expressed concern over the refusal of some customers to pay their bills and activities of those he described as recalcitrant customers who by-pass meters in order to avoid payment.

“How can we be profitable if customers are not paying their bills?

“We have been trying to have customer engagements as part of effort to sensitise them on the need for prompt payment of their bills in order to serve them better,’’ he said.

Mr Gwamna urged customers to avoid making payment to its illegal staff; warning that on no account customers should they pay to such people.

“Customers should endeavour to go to our customer unit offices located across the states.

“The company had established customers care units as individual complaint could be attended within two hours while commercial customers’ complaints will be attended within 24 hours.

“Over the last five years, there is significant improvement in treating customers’ complaints with prompt attention.

“We have recently opened online customer’s complaint unit to enable the company attend to customers complaints promptly,” he said.
