ABUJA- A Senatorial aspirant to the Taraba South Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mathias Agbu has described the incessant killings in Southern Taraba as disheartening.
Agbu who stated this during an interview with a few journalists in Abuja, noted that though, the situation is improving; there is much left still to worry about. The aspirant also said “the incessant attacks on villages in southern Taraba and the rising criminality in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital is worrisome.” He continued, “Conflicts are rampant in our country because, among other challenges, majority of our people are seriously very poor. Studies have confirmed that conflicts thrive where poverty is endemic.” He also noted that, part of the problem is that “like most others do, Taraba do not have a proper representation at the federal level. They’ve been surcharged for a long time because politics has been played as a selfish game by majority of the leaders.” On the way out, Agbu called for measures “to reduce poverty level in our local communities especially, if we’re interested in reducing the current level of conflicts.
